Magnesium is one of the few supplements where the form on the label changes the outcome more than the number does. Two products can both say 320 mg of magnesium and behave completely differently once you take them.
Oxide, citrate, bisglycinate
Magnesium oxide is the cheapest and the most common. It is poorly absorbed, and a good deal of it passes straight through β which is also why it has a reputation for loosening the bowels. Citrate absorbs better. Bisglycinate is chelated to the amino acid glycine, which lets it absorb through a different pathway and makes it gentle enough to take nightly.
Chelated forms cost several times more per kilogram to manufacture. That is the whole reason cheaper products use oxide, and the reason we do not.
What magnesium is approved to do
Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal psychological function, to electrolyte balance, and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Those are approved wordings on the EU Register of nutrition and health claims.
You will notice sleep is not on that list. There is no approved EU health claim linking magnesium to sleep, so we are not going to make one β even though it is the reason many people reach for it. What we can say is that magnesium supports normal muscle and nervous system function, and let you draw your own conclusions about the wind-down.
Signs your intake may be low
Magnesium is found in leafy greens, nuts, seeds and wholegrains, and plenty of diets fall short. Things people commonly report:
- Muscle cramps or eye twitches
- Feeling wired but tired in the evening
- Persistent fatigue that sleep does not fix
- Higher requirements from heavy training or high stress
- Stomach upset from a cheaper magnesium taken previously
How to take it
Two capsules with liquid, ideally with a meal, 30β60 minutes before bed. Judge it after one to two weeks of consistent use rather than on the first night β this is not a sedative and it does not work like one.
Our approach
Restorative Sleep Complex provides 320 mg of magnesium as bisglycinate with taurine and vitamin B6, in a plant-based pullulan capsule. The amounts and the form are both printed on the label.
